COLLABORATIONS: CREATING THE IMIGONGO PRINT

Since 2020, Afriek has evolved to work with bespoke prints, designed by creatives from around the world, For our first collection after the relaunch, we worked with Rwandan Artist UWASE Crista who brought her hand drawn creations into the print, inspired by the traditional Rwandan designs of Imigongo. 

Crista’s artistic practice includes a strong focus on collage techniques, using pieces of torn up paper, wool, and other fabrics.

In creating the print Crista collaborated with French artist and fashion designer Stephane Barbier. Both artists closely collaborated to create the collage of the print by photographing and combining the drawings into a repetitive pattern. The pattern was used for a large scale landscape print featured on the back of the Our Difference Is Our Power t-shirts.  This print will also be the central design motif for our  upcomingcollection of dresses… watch this space!
